We're constantly being bombarded with the same phrase, over and over again. "The money is in the List", well that's great. There's money in having a list there's no doubt about that, but the questions that this phrase leaves unanswered is……….

  • What exactly is a list? Where do you start? How do you build a list?
What kind of list should I start?
  • How is there money in a list?

I think it would be best to start with, "What exactly is a list?" I'll break this down into basic terms; in short a list is an organized group of people's names and email addresses. A list can sometimes also contain physical addresses and phone numbers too. Now that we have a basic understanding of a list, I'll move on to the other questions.

One of the most confusing points of building a list is, "Where do you start" You need to first ask yourself two questions..

What is your target audience?

  1. What can you offer that will influence people interested in (target market) to sign
    up?

The most important aspect to consider before you even start working on your list building is; what is my target audience? You have to narrow your targeted market down as closely as possible; otherwise you'll be marketing too wide and not receive good results.

Ask yourself, what can I offer people that will get them interested in my list?

If I were to see this, would it be convincing enough for me? You can offer many things that you may not even realize you have.

Offer a free report, an ebook or even personal advice that you know of in your area. I have offered many things for my lists, from free 40.00 ebooks to access to marketing audios. Read over or listen to the information prior to offering it. Nothing is more embarrassing than realizing too late that the information was poor.

What ever it is that you offer to your new list make sure it's related to what you're going to market to them later. Which brings us to another important list building question.

How do I build a list? Here are the beginning steps for "successfully" building your very own list.

  • Step 1 - Determine what your target market is. Narrow it down as tightly as possible, the tighter the better.
  • Step 2 - Design a web page to offer your "incentive" to your target audience (This can be as simple as a small HTML page you design - See Example here)
  • Step 3 - Get an Autoresponder to use for automatic delivery of your offer. (You can get a Free one with personalization at TIMMREPLY - use it to deliver and follow up with your subscribers) I use a Professional Autoresponder - atrpResponderPro)
  • Step 4 - Using whatever means you have to get the word out Advertise your incentive. Use newsgroups, Safelists, Click Exchanges, Free Ads, Solo Ads, PPC Engines, email. (Hint: Research Ezines for your market, contact them about your offer, many will run your small ad for Free. Get creative, you'll be surprised at the new means of advertising you come up with.
  • Step 5 - Write follow-up messages for your subscribers, always greet them personally (by First Name) make them feel comfortable with you, this builds loyalty.
  • Step 6 - Organize a series of follow-up messages promoting your offers, soft selling always works better with email marketing.

At this point I'm sure you can see how there is money in a list. I want to give you some strong personal advice. NEVER endorse something you don't believe in, in fact you'll see very few endorsements from me for that single reason.

Over endorsing makes your subscribers feel like they're just a number, this is definitely not what you want.

Treat your subscribers with respect, answer their questions honestly and always write your messages with a good mindset, your mood shows right through your writing. You'll be rewarded greatly for this, I promise.
